Charles "Lucky" Luciano was one of the most famous gangsters in the U.S. during the 1920's.Lucky moved to the U.S. with his family in 1906 to NY. The Lansky-Luciano friendship began at a young age, when Luciano tried to beat up Lansky and Lansky stood up to him. Although Luciano was Italian and Lansky was Jewish, they became friends and, later, business partners
Even at such a young age Luciano established himself as a "creative thug" By the age of 10 lucky was already involved in muggings, shoplifiting, and extortion. Luciano left school at fourteen and got a job as a shipping clerk. He also sold drugs and in 1915 was arrested for the possession of several kilos of heroin. In 1916 lucky was sent to jail for 6 months for selling heroine. After lucky got out of jail is when he earned his name"lucky" for evading arrest and winning craps games. In 1920 he entered the crime family of "Joe the Boss" Masseria and within five years was overseeing bootlegging, prostitution, and other illegal enterprises, and had become Masseria's chief lieutenant.
In October of 1929 he became the rare gangster to survive a “one-way ride”; he was abducted by four men in a car, beaten, stabbed repeatedly with an ice pick, had his throat slit from ear to ear, and was left for dead on a Staten Island beach...but somehow survived this inhospitable attack.
Lucky survived through and through and came out on top of everyone but there were some instances where lucky was in a war with some other gangsters of NYC.
Luciano is said to have created a group of professional assassins known as Murder, Inc. When Luciano died he was then allowed to come back to the united states and he is now buried at St. John's cemetery in New York City.
